This is a chainsaw carving of a bear, hand carved in one piece of wood. This handmade woodworking makes a perfect wood gift to a friend or oneself. This black bear wood carving was made by me, Josh Carte, here in Ohio.
18" tall, 12 1/2" diameter, 22 pounds. This is a large piece! It makes quite a statement!
Everything in my shop is made by hand, by me, Josh.
This sculpture began as a large, White Pine log. I shaped the log into a bear using several different chainsaws. Once I went as far as I could with a chainsaw, I used a torch and sanders to rid the piece of all the chips and fuzzies. To refine the eyes and a bit of the nose, I used a few different hand tools. Next, I painted the carving using black enamel paint and a little bit of white. The entire carving is finished with two coats of UV resistant, spar urethane.
Chainsaw carvings are made of living wood. The carving should be out of direct sunlight and off of the ground. It is a good idea to place a barrier between the wood and the surface it is to touch. Chainsaw carvings are likely to split/check. A black sharpie will help hide any imperfections over time. Chainsaw carvings need to be treated the same way as outdoor wood furniture. A new coat of urethane should be applied 1-2 times per year.

Care instructions
My carvings can be cleaned using many different methods. A feather duster works nicely. Compressed air (duster or air compressor) also works well. If on a porch or indoors, my carvings will never need a new coat of sealer. Chainsaw carvings that are outdoors will need a fresh coat of sealer each year.
