This is a wood carving of a wood spirit, hand carved in a Pine knot. It is a unique and one of a kind gift made by me, Josh Carte, here in Ohio. This mountain man face sculpture is a piece of wall hanging art that is great for log cabins or any other setting.
This unique, wood spirit is carved in a knot from a Pine Tree aka a Pine Knot. Pine knots are sort of like the forest's driftwood. When a Pine tree dies and decays back into the earth, the resilient, pitch-filled knots remain for years and years. Anywhere a branch meets the base of the tree on a Pine, a knot is formed. Because of knots' long lives after the rest of the tree is gone, they are said to have spirits in them. My job is releasing the spirit :)

Everything in my shop is made by hand, by me, Josh.
This is a wall-hanging carving that measures 12 3/8" tall, 2 1/4" wide and 2" thick. I signed and dated the back and also included a hanger on the back.
I made the back flat so this carving hangs very nicely on your wall.
All of my wood spirit carvings come with a certificate telling a bit about me. I sign, date and list the name of your carving on the certificate. Be sure to view all 5 pictures!

I carve using rotary hand tools- very similar to the tools a dentist uses. I carve each piece using many different burs and sanders until I get it just right. I then paint my carvings by hand. I only use just a little paint that is very thinned out, so all of the wood grain is still visible. This carving was painted using oil paints and sealed with urethane.

Care instructions
My carvings can be cleaned using many different methods. A feather duster works nicely. Compressed air (duster or air compressor) also works well. If on a porch or indoors, my carvings will never need a new coat of sealer. Chainsaw carvings that are outdoors will need a fresh coat of sealer each year.
