This is a very large, Big Leaf Maple Burl! It makes a perfect gift for a friend, loved one, or oneself.
17 1/2” tall, 17” wide, 1” thick.
Hand carved in Big Leaf Maple burl by me, Josh :)
This is a dry and stable piece of beautiful and unique wood. This lovely piece of burl is now very stable and will remain in-tact and beautiful forever. It is finished with three coats of urethane which help protect it from dust. It is something that has been harvested from nature, properly cured and wonderfully carved. It can now be passed from generation to generation :)
I signed and dated the back. There is also a hanger on the back for easy installation.
I am in charge of everything that goes on in this shop....The carving, packaging, listing, shipping, communication...It's all me. I don't have any elves, helpers or workers. So, when you buy from me, you are supporting me and my family. We really appreciate you!
I used a whole lot of different tools to make this carving. It began with a sketch and ended with lots of sand paper and urethane. I finished the bear using thinned, oil paints. In between were jig saws, hand tools and router bits. This type of carving is called, "pierced relief". It is a very time consuming style of carving but I love every minute of it! This is truly a one of a kind carving.
There are some live edges and bark inclusions to this carving. I really love this type of wood. These burls grow on Big Leaf Maples and are just amazing to me. Many buds are sent to one area of the tree where a burl is formed and the resulting wood is very hard with interlocking grain.
I will be glad to engrave something in the back, as long as it is fairly short, free of charge. Something like, "Happy Anniversary!", "I love you so much", "9/16/07", etc. Please let me know, as a note, what you would like carved in the back when you purchase this carving. My engraving is nothing fancy, but very meaningful.
I carve everyday for a living. It's my favorite thing in the world to do :) The two things that I love most are my family and carving wood. So, it only makes sense that I carve wood to support my family :) I have been at it for almost 12 years and I still love it just as much as I did when I began!
I live in the woods, so I'm very inspired by what's around me- trees, animals and sometimes people :)

I really enjoy creating themed walking sticks such as Odin, Thor, Baron Samedi or many, many other possibilities. If you'd like a stick with bears, owls, or whatever else you might have in mind, just shoot me a message and we can discuss it.
I am also happy to make custom chainsaw carvings of about any animal or object you'd like.

My carvings can be cleaned using many different methods. A feather duster works nicely. Compressed air (duster or air compressor) also works well. If on a porch or indoors, my carvings will never need a new coat of sealer. Chainsaw carvings that are outdoors will need a fresh coat of sealer each year.
